Explore your Hosting Control Panel

(This apply to clients with a web hosting package and not to those that only ordered a parked domain)

Your web hosting control panel is just that, the administration area from where you control your whole web hosting account so if you not already done so, we advice that you explore the different functions so that you can see what it does.

The earlier you start exploring and know the hosting control panel (cpanel) the easier is it to fix whatever you did wrong but even with that said the change is slim that you'll mess up anything if you just READ the text in front of you and use common sense.

There are many advanced and other functions on the hosting control panel that not even I ever used so except from having a peek just to see what it's about you can further just ignore it.

The most common used functions is;

Email Tab - Well, that's obvious. You can create email addresses and change the passwords, maybe add a forwarder or autoresponder and also click on the Spamassasin link to activate and anti-spam feature.

Tip: Default Address is best with the option "Discard with error to sender (at SMTP time)"  No Such User Here. (If somebody send email to frank@mydomain.com it's ok if I created such email but an email to xxxxx@mydomain.com or unknowname@mydomain.com will be rejected and thus block a LOT of spam)

Files Tab - The Backups link is the most used and let you download either specific parts or a full account backup. (In the case of Download or Generate a Full Website Backup a full, current backup file is generated and placed in your root directory from where you can download it to your computer.)

Tip: Delete this backup file after download because it take a lot of space. You can use this backup to restore your FULL account on any cPanel server like ours

You can use the other links to view your website files and directories, add or remove files etc but my advice is that you rather right from the start obtain and use a good FTP program because it's much easier that way.

Logs Tab - Statistical and other log files

Security Tab - Mostly already configured but you might sometimes use the Password Protect Directories to password protect a specific directory.

Domains Tab - Allow you to add addon (additional) domains or parked domains but we must still assist to register this ACTUAL domains for you. Sub-domains is not actual domains and merely replace the www into something like clients, orders etc. http://clients.mydomain.com (it's the same as the directory http://www.mydomain.com/clients/)

Databases Tab - MySql Databases let you create a database, create an username and password and assign an user to a database while phpMyAdmin let you manage your databases directly.

Software / Services Tab -

RVsiteBuilder allow you to build your own website but it's only recommended for websites that don't need advanced functionality and such things. While some of our clients are fond of this program and build a few awesome websites with it, I personally prefer to build websites manually due to the full control even with my "limited" HTML knowledge.

Softaculous allow you to install many complicated and good websites with just a few clicks and can save you a lot of time and money. It's definitively a Must Try function.

Advanced Tab - The "Cron" function is the most used but require some struggle / knowledge. It's basically a scheduler to run a specific program at set intervals such as to generate daily log files and invoices or perform program maintenance such as cleanup, uptimization etc.
